How DTG Printing and GSM Fabric Weight Define Every Tastey Threads Tee

One of Tastey Threads' goals before fully launching was: How do we make our designs retain their intricate features and how can we make them last despite wash and wear?
These aren't simple graphics — they're detailed, layered worlds compressed onto fabric. And that means the way we print matters just as much as what we print.
Here's an honest look at why we chose DTG printing, what it does well, where it has limits, and how we've built around those limits deliberately.
What Is DTG Printing?
DTG stands for Direct-to-Garment. It works exactly how it sounds — a specialized inkjet printer applies ink directly onto the fabric, layer by layer, with the kind of detail that other methods can't match.
Screen printing is the industry workhorse — great for bold, simple designs at high volume. But it requires separating artwork into individual color layers, which means gradients, fine lines, and complex illustrations either get simplified or lost entirely.
DTG doesn't ask you to compromise the art. It prints what you designed.
For a brand built on intricate, story-driven graphics, that's not a small thing. It's the whole point.

The Honest Trade-Off
We're not going to tell you DTG is the best printing method in every situation — because it isn't.
At high volumes, screen printing is more cost-efficient. On synthetic fabrics, DTG ink doesn't bond as well. And on any fabric, a DTG print will fade faster if the shirt isn't cared for properly or if the blank underneath isn't up to the job.
That last part is where most brands cut corners. They choose DTG for the design flexibility, then pair it with the not so great blank they can find — and this leaves the buyer wondering why the print looks dull after a few washes.
We, on the other hand — went the other direction.
Why Fabric Weight Changes Everything
GSM — grams per square meter — is the measure of how much fabric is packed into every square inch of a t-shirt. A standard promotional tee runs around 130–150 GSM. Our shirts start at 190 GSM and go up to 240 GSM.
That difference isn't just about how a shirt feels in your hands (though it does feel noticeably better). It directly affects how a DTG print performs.
Here's why: DTG ink bonds to cotton fibers. The denser the weave, the more surface area the ink has to grip. Higher GSM fabrics absorb ink more evenly, produce more vibrant color, and hold that color longer through repeated washing. On a lightweight blank, the same print looks flatter and fades faster — not because the printing was done wrong, but because the fabric couldn't support it.
Choosing a 190–240 GSM blank isn't a premium upsell. It's the fix for DTG's biggest weakness.
The Tastey Threads Standard
When we landed on DTG + heavyweight cotton as our combination, it wasn't a default — it was a decision.
DTG because our designs are too detailed to survive simplification. Heavyweight blanks because the print deserves a foundation that can hold it. Both choices serve the same goal: a shirt that looks as good on day 90 as it did on day one.
We're not interested in printing on blanks that undercut the artwork. What we do have is the ability to be intentional about every variable we control — and fabric weight is one of them.

How to Make Your Print Last
DTG prints are durable when the shirt is cared for correctly. A few habits that extend the life of any Tastey Threads tee:
- Wash inside out — protects the print surface from friction in the drum
- Cold water only — heat breaks down ink bonds faster than anything else
- Skip the high heat dry — air dry or tumble on low; high heat is the fastest way to fade a DTG print
- No bleach or harsh detergents — they degrade the ink and the fabric simultaneously
Follow the steps above and the print holds. Ignore them and no GSM in the world will save it.
